Wildlife On Your Doorstep
About Group
I thought I would start a group about "Wildlife" as there seems to be quite a few of us into birdwatching.
Here in Liverpool UK there's not much of it but I do what I can to encourage it.
I have flown a few birds of prey and owned them too.
Here the birds of prey that are wild are....
Sparrowhawks
Kestrels
Tawny,Barn and Little Owls.
Buzzards (Common)
In some parts of the UK there are Peregrine Falcons which are just amazing to watch.

Nice one Ian.
I'm in Somerset right now. There are Deer around at the moment, I see them first thing in the morning, grazing on the farmland to the south of the old mine workings ( don't worry, it's the uncontaminated bit)and Badgers, loads of 'em, this time of year the young ones are striking out , looking for a patch of their own. There are alot of Hedgehogs too, all routeling around in the undergrowth, and, judging by the noise, getting it owwwwn too.
Right now, we have Nightjars singing, and recently I saw a Treecreeper, which is quite rare.
Yesterday, whilst on a trip underground we came across a colony of Springtails, a minute (0.2mm) cave dwelling bug, and found Fossilised remains of a 300,000,000 year old (yes 300 million !)sea creature.
Cities.... who needs 'em.
Nice one Tegan, I will take a peek.
Ian, Sounds a lovely place. Only been to Somerset once. Loved it too.
Nice one folks.
im not quite sure how to upl;oad photos to groups, but ive just uploaded some photos of rainbow lorikeets and scaly breasted lorikeets if yer interested :)
I'm a caver, and spend a lot of time on the Mendip Hills in Somerset (South West England). This area has been used for Lead mining/smelting since pre-roman times. The ground is so hevily contaminated with Lead, Arsenic,Cadmium, and a whole host of other s**t, that large parts of it are "Un-Useable" ie. You cant build on it, grow crops or graze livestock on it. Because of this, it's full of wildlife, Amphibians (Frogs Toads, Newts) Lizzard, Slow Worms, Grass Snakes,One of the largest populations of Adders in Britain, Hedgehogs, Foxes, Badgers, Dragonflys, and high above, Kestrells, Hawks, Buzzards, Nightjars, and Masses of Bats,
Just because it's a Post Industrial Wasteland, doesn't mean it's sterile,,,, far from it
Nice one Stevie Joe.
The Osprey we have here but it is very rare, found mainly in Scotland, and I have never seen one.
Red Shoulder Hawk ? Is that like the British Kestrel?
I've see them Racoons on TV. Wow, they're vicious creatures.
Anyway..
I shall check the Facebook page out asap. Cheers buddy.
I live on a lake in South Florida. I have a wide verity of wild life. The Osprey (a type of Eagle) family live across the lake and catch more fish, in a day, then I can in a month.lol
I also have a Red Shoulder Hawk family in my neighbors tree. We also have Iguana's, Raccoon's & Possum's.
I love watching Raptors in there natural habitat. I also like working with my friends to give out info about Raptors. We have a Facebook page "Flight Of The Raptor" Stop over and enjoy.
Is right Mysteryroach.
What's the wildlife you have around your parts ?
Nice to have you join us.
it took me a while to find this group but i'm glad i did! bird-watching zappa fans are pretty rare around these parts. it's good to know that there are a few more freaks like me out there.
Michel....The twins survived with some minor injuries. They had to have 24 hour security around the house for a week to deter any fox.
I've uploaded some photo's of a Great Spotted Woodpecker feeding it's chick.
Enjoy
wow, that is very unusual. No, I did not hear about it, this is the first. It is unfortunate but the land is being taken away from our animal friends and they are having to look else where for food. Did the twins survive?
Did anyone (Outside the UK) hear the news of a Fox that mauled two 9 month old twins in their bedroom ?
Sad for the children and the Fox as the Fox must of been very hungry to risk or do such a thing.
Nice story Machel,
Nature is just amazing. Lovely to see birds leave the nest.
I too had Wrens and they where almost ready to leave until a Magpie killed them. So sad.
I love the spring. Yesterday I sat on the porch watching the rain as it fell gently from the sky. All the birds were in glory, fluttering about in the rain. Flying from tree to tree and bush to bush. The hummingbirds have finally arrived and it is a great honor to be able to sit and watch them as they drink nectar from the feeders. They sometimes will swoop down by my head while I am sitting on the porch. We live in the country and have titmice, cardinals, red and golden finches, chickadees and lots of other birds. A family of wrens had their babies on the porch above the door and I was able to watch them as they took their first flight. It was so breathtaking and such a privilege to watch as they flew for the first time.
Been quiet here...no pics of any wildlife ?
C'mon you tree huggers..get yer camera's out!
